Jack Arsenault is king of (crossing) the road.

The 62-year-old Arsenault has been crowned Canada’s Favorite Crossing Guard in the 10th annual contest put on by Federal Express Canada Ltd.

Students stood and erupted with loving approval when Arsenault walked into the Parkdale elementary school gymnasium Monday to accept the award.

“I think Jack is a great crossing guard,’’ said Emma Johnston, a Grade 6 student at Parkdale.

“He’s friendly. He smiles a lot at everybody.’’

Principal Michelle LeClair says Arsenault clicks with the children because the youngsters recognize and appreciate his sincerity.

“He’s very caring,’’ said LeClair. “He’s got a quiet, easy-going nature that they respond well to. He’s got a great sense of humour.’’

LeClair says Arsenault is always looking out for the interests of children whether he is at curbside or not. He has, for instance, got autograph memorabilia from the P.E.I. Rocket hockey team to give to special needs students at the school.

“Just the way he has about him of looking out for kids,’’ she said.

“We’ve had some kids with behaviour challenges. He can cajole them into doing something they may not want to do (but should do)...because they see he is a genuine guy and they see that he is sincere.’’

Arsenault stumbled into his sideline.

When he began work at Parkdale as a custodian 33 years ago, he was asked to fill in for one day as a crossing guard.

“I said I would and I’ve been there ever since,’’ he said.

Arsenault welcomed adding the role of safely guiding children across the street to being a full-time custodian.

“I really enjoy the kids,’’ he said.

“They’ve been nice to me and I’ve been nice to them. We have a lot of fun.’’

Make that safe fun.

He has safely crossed children heading to and from school without incident for 33 years. Once — just once — he had to haul a child back to the sidewalk to avoid a potential collision. Arsenault was nearly struck by a car on another occasion.

But under his watch, children get across the street safe and sound every single time.

“The biggest thing is I always tell my children ‘stay on the side of the road. Do not move until I give you the okay,’’’ he said.

“The kids are really good here. They follow orders really good. They come to the cross walk and they do not move until I give them the okay.’’

Canada’s Favorite Crossing Guard contest is an annual contest that encourages schools, students, teachers and parents from across Canada to nominate exceptional crossing guards in their community. It is part of the Walk This Way pedestrian safety program launched by FedEx Express Canada and Safe Kids Canada.

Arsenault was thrilled to get the nod along with two other crossing guards in Canada.

“I was just shocked,’’ he said of the award, which earned his school a $1,000 cheque to put towards the purchase of a computer and created the opportunity for Parkdale students to show just how much they appreciate their crossing guard.

“I never, ever realized this was going to happen. It really felt good — really good.”

One saturday afternoon I was delivering The Star weekly and had just left Skippy Carver's on my bike when I fell off and scraped my knees on the ash covered driveway.
Jack Gay came out and took me in the house above the Dairy and his wife Louise cleaned up my wound.
They were going on a family picnic and took me along.
We had a great time swimming and playing in the sand and then ate hotdogs cooked over a fire on the beach.
Also in the picture are Debbie, Nancy and their Mom Louise.

This video is 1966 and begins by the Rail Tracks, on the left is the Jail and on the right Walter Burhoe's Whit Rose. It then goes by our home and on the left , The Cake Box, Berry's , Mrs Hudson's, Carver's Oil. The vehicles on the left are, Harley Ings car, a wagon maybe Art Love's and Wacky Carver's Panel truck.
The Nash parked in front of the Drug store looks like Earl Jewell's.
Then on the right Elmer's BA .
The video turns just after Archer & MacDonalds Furniture and Harold MacInnis's store and down to The 36 where it is being drained.
The fly over Parkdale and Charlottetown is interesting, notice Roper's Esso, SR Johnston's, St Pius.
The smoke from Maritime Electric was constant back then.
The Provincial Buildings are under constuction and Gov't pond is still in tact, also Coast Guard is not yet built.
Then out to East Royalty to the Incenerator.

Here is a photo of my Great Uncle Alex (Sander) Mackay, a brother to my Grandfather Colin. Their father John arrived from Scotland, Sutherland County, Cape Wrath at age 28. He landed in pictou and moved to PEI.

Alexander (Alex). His dates are 1876-1958.
He was married to Gertrude Houston (1893-1990)

I'm not sure of the year this is, but they sang "The King" so it is pre 1952 brother Ernie was in it sinigng a solo "Bruce and The Spider" no it isn't Spiderman, it is Robert The Bruce.

Another of the great people of Parkdale was Dr. Higgins a veteranarian.
He had an office in his basement and was kind to a kid in need. there was not alot of money to go around back then to raise a family let alone healthcare for an animal. In a time when you could get a cat or dog for free people didn't spend money on sick anaimals. But to a kid the dog or cat may have been picked up for free but as a friend they were priceless.
Dr. higgins was very compasionate with a soft spot for a kid that needed needles for their pet or needed them spade.
He always seemed to know what a kid could afford and charge just what you had in your pocket.

Hi Carl, me again. Did you ever come up to our back yard after a big snow storm when Dad would have Ginger MacKay pile all the snow up to make a big hill so we could slide down?
I remember just about every kid from Beasley Ave. would be there. They would stay right after dark too. We had big lights that lit up the whole yard and Mom would say
"Barney, Put the lights out so they will go home."
They were always scared someone would get hurt and you had to quit sometime.
I never thought of that until today.

This Building was called Scott's Mill it was situated on Ginger Mackays home and where Newt had The Morris Dealership.
The mill burned in 1942, my brother Ernie said it was a saturday afternoon and he and his friends had jst left the movie theatre after watching Roy Rogers and they saw the fire and of course ran to watch it.

This picture of Love's property is dated 1913. It is still standing but was almost gone a few years ago.

I see in The Guardian this morning that Horace Smith passed away, he was 93 and was married for 68 years.
Horace ran Smith Auto Body in Parkdale for many years, on St Peters Road ( A great Kenny Burke story here) and then on Beasley Ave.
We had alot of fun at the shop on saturday afternoons.
Horace and Mrs Smith both attended the reunion last June at the school and we appreciated them making the effort to attend.
Horace was one of the "greatest" generation who left their homes as young men and fought some of the most evil men the world has seen.
Thankyou Horace, well done.

This is a great picture taken the day before I was born. The ride just below the Fun On The Farm exhibit is The Catapillar, it moved down to the lower entrance when i was old enough to go.
The Rollo Planes are also here and the one next to it looks like the Merry Go Round not completed.

In this picture you can see people on The Swings and a great view of The Sideshows.

I read in this mornings paper Allison West passed away.
Mr West was a Trustee when the New School was built.
Here is a picture of him presenting a certifacte to Richard Baldwin at the Grade Ten Graduation banquet.
This is taken at the old Women's Institute Hall on first Street, probably June 1962.

Next to Mr West is "Chief" , don't know the person on the end.

"The priest (sitting) sure looks like Fr. Edmund Roche."

This Yearbook cover was drawn by John & Max Martin. They lived at #5 Idlewheels Trailer Park in Parkdale. John was killed in 1965.

This next picture only includes students who did not have to write the Entrance Exams. These dreadfull exams were mandatory for grade 10 students who did not have a 70% average. If you failed Entrance you could not graduate Grade 10. There are a few of us missing from the photo.
